Winter in the Flathead asks a lot of a vehicle
If you live in Northwest Montana, you already know the drill. Early snow on Big Mountain, black ice on US-2 near Columbia Falls, unplowed side streets in Evergreen and gravel driveways that turn to slush in March. Choosing an AWD SUV in Kalispell isn’t about luxury. It’s about getting to work, school and the ski hill safely from November through April.
The good news is that Hyundai offers all-wheel drive across almost its entire SUV and truck lineup, at prices that often undercut similar AWD models. This guide walks through every AWD Hyundai at Clark Hyundai, explains how Hyundai’s HTRAC® system works, and covers the one thing that matters even more than AWD in a Montana winter: tires.
How Hyundai HTRAC all-wheel drive works
HTRAC is Hyundai’s electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. Instead of sending power to all four wheels all the time, it constantly reads wheel speed, steering angle and throttle, and shifts torque between the front and rear axles as conditions change. That gives you efficiency on dry pavement and extra grip when a road turns slick.
Reads the road
When sensors detect a wheel slipping on ice at a Kalispell stoplight, HTRAC sends more torque to the axle with grip, helping you pull away smoothly instead of spinning.
Drive modes
Many HTRAC-equipped Hyundais offer selectable terrain or drive modes, which may include settings for snow, mud or sand. They adjust throttle, shifting and torque split for the surface.1
Works with your safety systems
AWD teams up with stability control, traction control and downhill brake control where equipped. Remember: AWD helps you go, but tires and careful driving help you stop and turn.

For big families: Palisade and Palisade Hybrid
If you’re hauling a hockey team to the Woodland Ice Center or the whole family to Whitefish for the weekend, the Palisade is the AWD Hyundai to start with. It seats up to eight, and the gas model’s V6 is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.2
The Palisade Hybrid is the newer choice for Flathead families. Its turbocharged 2.5-liter hybrid system makes 329 horsepower, and the 2027 Palisade Hybrid AWD is EPA-rated at 29 MPG city, 31 highway and 30 combined.3 That’s a meaningful difference on long drives to Missoula, Polson or Libby. Read more on our Hyundai Palisade page and see current Palisade offers.

For everyday versatility: Tucson and Santa Fe
The Tucson is the do-everything compact SUV. It’s sized for Kalispell parking lots, roomy enough for a dog crate and ski bags, and offered in gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions with all-wheel drive. Our Tucson page breaks down the trims, and you can browse current Tucson offers.
The Santa Fe steps up in size with an upright, boxy shape that maximizes cargo space and an available third row. The Santa Fe Hybrid adds efficiency for rural commutes. If you’re outfitting a vehicle for camping at Flathead Lake State Park or long ski weekends, the Santa Fe’s cargo area is a big part of its appeal. See our Santa Fe Hybrid page and Santa Fe offers.

For value and small footprints: Kona, Santa Cruz and IONIQ 5
The Kona brings available AWD to the most affordable end of Hyundai’s SUV lineup, a smart pick for a student at Flathead Valley Community College or a commuter who wants winter confidence without a big payment.
The Santa Cruz pickup offers HTRAC AWD with an open bed for firewood, bikes and bulky gear, and the turbocharged XRT is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.2
The electric IONIQ 5 uses two motors to deliver near-instant all-wheel drive. The low-mounted battery also gives it a planted feel on snow. It’s a great fit if you can charge at home; our Hyundai EV Hub covers charging basics.

AWD gets you going. Winter tires help you stop.
This is the most important paragraph on this page. All-wheel drive helps a vehicle accelerate on slippery roads, but it does very little to help you brake or steer. On packed snow and ice, stopping and turning depend almost entirely on your tires. An AWD SUV on worn all-season tires can be less safe than a front-wheel-drive car on good winter tires.
That’s why so many Flathead Valley drivers run a dedicated set of winter tires from roughly November through April. Winter tires use softer rubber that stays flexible in cold temperatures, plus deep tread and sipes that bite into snow and ice. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall.
Your Montana winter-prep checklist
- Install winter tires before the first hard freeze. Mounting them on a second set of wheels makes the seasonal swap faster and cheaper. Our tire center can help you choose a set.
- Test your battery. Cold weather is hard on batteries, and a weak one often fails on the first sub-zero morning. Ask about a battery check.
- Inspect brakes. Long downhill grades and icy stops put extra demand on brakes. Schedule a brake inspection.
- Change oil on schedule. Keep up with an oil change using the grade Hyundai specifies for your engine.
- Pack a winter kit. Blanket, gloves, flashlight, snacks, water, a shovel, traction aids and a phone charger. Check MDT 511 before mountain drives.

Where AWD earns its keep around Kalispell
Big Mountain Road to Whitefish Mountain Resort. The climb from Whitefish to the base area is steep and often snow-packed on powder days. AWD and winter tires make the morning drive far less stressful.
US-2 through Bad Rock Canyon to Hungry Horse. The canyon stretch past Columbia Falls can stay icy in shade long after town roads clear.
Rural roads and driveways. Many homes in Kila, Marion, Lakeside and up the hills around Bigfork sit on gravel or steep private roads that see plows last.
US-93 toward Polson and Eureka. Long, exposed stretches can deliver blowing snow and sudden slick spots. AWD helps with traction when you pull out to pass or climb.
Before heading over Marias Pass or through Glacier National Park in shoulder season, check MDT 511 road reports and seasonal closures.
